My hair is falling out! lol

I used to have super, super thick hair.  I mean, I could barely wrap a hair tie around it twice.  Then, all of a sudden, it started falling out a lot.  When I went to the doctor when I was in the convent (two years ago) because of my hot flashes, the doctor asked me if I noticed my hair falling out at all.  At the time, I said no because I was in the convent and wasn't paying much attention to my hair (obviously. lol).  However, after she mentioned something, I started to pay closer attention and noticed that my hair really does fall out A LOT.  This was also around the time I started skipping periods more and more often.  I know hair falling out is normal, but I mean, it's tons and tons of it.  My hair is everywhere.  It's on the couch, in the sink and tub, on all of our clothes, in our food (which is NOT pleasant), and all over the seats in our car.  It's gotten to the point where I'm a little afraid to brush my hair.  I've also noticed that the individual hairs are actually thinner.

Does anybody know what could be causing this?  Could Premature Ovarian Failure (or insufficiency) or early menopause cause it?  I'm obviously not postpartum, so it can't be that. ;)  I've been taking prenatal vitamins for almost two years, which I thought would help, but they're not.  The doctors I've talked to about it don't really take it seriously and say it's all in my head (I hear this a LOT).  I would love to hear your thoughts on this... I don't want to go bald at 22, ladies! lol

  1. THYROID! If they tell you its all in your head they are nuts, even if your labs are within range! THYROID!

  2. Um... I have this issue too. My hair goes through thinning out periods. Except I naturally have very fine hair so I think my hair looks noticeably BAD much more quickly. I'd say I have... half the hair I had in high school? Except... it seems to have thickened up as of late again. If you asked me at 24 if I'd have hair at 30, I'd say no way, I fully expect to be bald at 30. Well, here I am at 30 with a decent head of hair.

I've read stress can cause temporary hair loss in some (like lots of hair, not just a little). Also, what Sew said... thyroid issues can definitely cause hair loss.

You and me both need to get the thyroid checked! But it's not all in your head (hate it when they say that!)

  3. My hair is the same way!! My husband HATES IT!! But what can I do?!?! I hate blow drying and straightening my hair because it leaves SOO much hair on the bathroom floor.

I've heard thyroid problems too, but I'm on Synthroid and it still falls out. I'm puzzled?

  4. I had the same thing happen with my hair! It wasn't until I got on Hydrocort that it got better.

I also had some hair loss around the time of my wedding. My doctor said not to worry, but I knew it was the stress that was getting to me.

  5. I know you said they checked your thyroid and it was normal, but I'm hypothyroid and that is what causes my hair loss most of the time. It is even listed as a warning when they give you thyroid meds.

  6. Also, some other medications can cause hair loss.

Some possible causes: Stress, hormone imbalance/thyroid, medicines such as blood thinners, medicines used for gout, high blood pressure or heart problems, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants, as well as some diseases like lupus or diabetes.

  7. I have the same issue...its all over the place!!

Definitely can be your thryoid..You should have a Napro MD look at your TFT's (thyroid function tests) to see where your TSH is an above post said, secular MD may say "its in range"...My Napro MD caught my problem and I am on armour thyroid for it

  8. Definietly sounds like thyroid. Are your eyebrows thinning as well?
